Hi everyone,
I have had a terrible ten days. I picked up a chest and throat infection from school on my phased return to work. Was in bed all weekend, saw my GP on Monday who prescribed 500mg Amoxycillin 3 times a day for five days. I did not take my Enbrel but continued with leflunomide. I finish my antibiotics tomorrow and still have a dreadful cough and am going boiling hot all the time as if I have a temperature. I have my appetite back and feel more like my old self but cant shift this cough. What do you think? Should I go back to my GP or wait it out over the weekend and see if I improve?

Hi Louise - sorry you are still suffering. Does your GP offer a phone consultation? At our surgery a Nurse Practitioner or GP can call you back at an arranged time. They may suggest a longer course of antibiotics/different antibios/steroids, so I would ring in the morning if I was you. Hope you get some relief soon XX Ailsa

Sorry to hear that you have been ill in your return to work - just what
you didn't need.
I would go back to your GP. I say this because I have also had the
awful cough and needed 2 lots of courses of tablets. (i had the same
as you the second time) and it now cleared up

Hi Louse,
I agree with Rose, go back to your GP.
Let him listen to your chest and see if it is ok for you to go back on the enbrel.
It may be just a lingering cough you have and your chest is clear but you need to know one way or the other if it is safe to take the enbrel

Yes I agree, I'm off there in the morning myself. I've spent five days in the hospital with a kidney infection on intravenous anti-biotics and sent home with three days of pills but I'm still peeing blood and feeling pains so I think it's best not to delay I'm sure your GP won't mind at all.good luck. Hi Louise Leflunomide is also an immune suppressant drug and according to my packet leaflet should be stopped temporarily if you have an infection or are prescribed antibiotics. This could be the reason why you are still having problems; your immune system remains suppressed and you cannot fight the infection. Definitely see the GP and get checked over. Good luck, Lyn x

Yes, you should most definitely speak to the surgery. I also agree with Lyn that Leflunomide should be stopped too.

Hi everyone
Thanks for your replies. I phoned the GP surgery this morning and the receptionist left a message for the doctor (mine is on holiday or I would have gone to see him) I rang back and he had left me another prescription of anti-biotics and has said if I feel no better by Wednesday I have to go in to see him. I am now full of cold as well so really fed up. Think I will give the leflunomide a miss tonight because I just cant shake this infection.

Hi Louise You do need to stop the Leflunomide whilst taking the antibiotics; they won't work effectively with it as the immune system is compromised. Good luck Lyn x

Hello Louise, are you feeling any better yet, have the anti-biotics helped. I wondered because I'm still feeling really bad myself and thinking how long it may take clear it up. Glenys.

Hello Jean, I'm really struggling with this infection it seems to be carrying on for too long. I had made arrangemnts to stay with an old friend for a couple of days down south on tuesday but I'm not going to make it. It would be crazy to go traveling like this. I had booked the train to London because of my joints but ven so I daren't take the risk. Has your chest problem cleared up yet Jean ? Gleny. x
